I Want To Be Domesticated (Maybe Like A Cat)

domesticated animals made into pets

I never thought I would reach this point. I never thought I want to learn how to run a home. But it happened. And here I am wanting to be domesticated – like pets do (and they get to live well and harmlessly in an environment that is not their natural habitat). As for me, running a home is not natural for me.

I have been a person who cannot live without working. I love the fact that I am working because it keeps me busy. And I love the fact that I get to have money. Working also allows me to be productive and to use my mind. I feel like I need to use my brain or else I would feel really useless.

Because of my love for working and being busy, I never got to learn how to run a home. Add to that the fact that when I was younger up until now, we always had a helper who does everything for us. When I needed something bought in the store, I would just tell them to do that for me. When I felt hungry, they would be there to cook me something. All chores were up to them.

I did live on without helpers though. When I was in college, I lived in a dormitory during my first year. I also lived in boarding houses for a year and a half. For the remaining time I spent in college, I lived in a house with four other Bicolanos like me. All that time, we did not have helpers but let us just say that it still did not teach me much on domestication. But I did learn a lot during those times on the basics of living on my own.

When I started working, I also had my own home. During that time, I was all alone but my uncle and his family lived only four doors away. So they were always there looking after me and my home. I felt safe knowing that there was always someone looking out for my house if I was not there. And my laundry? Well, my aunt did that for me.

making a house a home

Maybe it is just me getting older but I want to be domesticated. I want to know how to work out my own home. Maybe it is me looking at my kid knowing that I could not actually give him what a real house should be like if I had no helper with me. All the decisions that need to be done to keep a home a home seem to be in another language. It seems like I am still in elementary school when it comes to running a home.

There are a lot of things that I want to learn. I know how the corporate world works and I have been there. I know how to earn my own money. Now I want to know how to have my own home and make that home work. It is a different world and I want to be in it and really be part of it. I’m taking all the tips that I can get, by the way. Step by step, I know I will learn.
